Korean Addiction Problems

The American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP) conducted a study that indicates that South Korea, out of all the countries, has the highest incidents in the world for internet addictions. As of late, the internet has been providing localized content targeted at civilians. Online Casinos right now have increased the number of options and activities to further simulate playing at a real casino at the convenience of your own home through the World Wide Web. Most of the activities found on online casinos are, online casino gambling, gambling and social networking sites. A Portland, Oregon based psychiatrist, Dr. Jerald Block has been working at the Oregon Health and Science University developing a case study about the South Korean internet addiction. Dr. Block also stated that it is an obvious major concern fir the country, however also said that some other countries may have the same high level of addiction but civilians are going on the internet with private settings that is why there is no true way of getting accurate data for that country compared to South Korea.

“In Korea, it seems to be primarily gaming sites. In America, it seems to be Facebook. It’s porn, it’s games, it’s gambling, it’s chatting with friends. All these things existed before, but now they’re a lot easier,” says Dr Jerald Block.

Dr. Block also notes that the most common categories that Internet Gambling Addicts are more inclined to are pornography, internet gaming and online casinos.

Gaming and online casino sites which fuel internet addiction is a major and immediate concern in South Korea where there have been ten Internet Addiction related deaths. There was also one incident of a man dying in 2005 after playing 50 straight hours of Starcraft.  Internet addiction will make people sit at internet café’s or other locations for long hours without any physical activity which is also is a cause for blood clots. Other effects that could greatly hinder South Korea are addicts dropping out of school, quitting their job and ending relationships that would amount to social decline. Plus the added feature of playing at the comfort of your own home is another factor that South Korean’s favor.
