European Online Poker Battle: Netherlands planned to allow online gambling but got cold feet
Early February saw another about-turn among authorities as Dutch Minister of Justice Hirsch Ballin postponed the scheduled Senate vote on granting a temporary but exclusive licence to state-run Holland Casino, which would allow it to offer online gaming, including poker.
Reports suggest that Minister Ballin feared the bill would be defeated after the European Commission moved to legally challenge Swedish poker monopoly Svenska Spel.
Previously, the Dutch Ministry of Justice declared it was drawing up a blacklist of what it considers illegal gambling websites and stated it would be prepared to prosecute Dutch financial institutions for dealing with them.
