European Online Poker Battle: Austria instituted a state-run poker room
Win2day.at is the new state-run (by Casinos Austria) gaming website which includes a poker platform powered by Sweden’s Svenska Spel. Launched in early February, the theory behind the room was to emulate the perceived success of the Swedish state-run monopoly model, but is likely to attract the ire of the European Commission if its authorities come down hard on publicly or privately owned competition.
In starting Internet poker operations at Win2Day.com, the Austrian government becomes one of only two European governments (the other is Sweden) to offer state-sponsored poker. The venture was put together in collaboration with the Swedish state gambling monopoly Svenske Spel and Swedish casino and poker turnkey provider Boss Media.
