SACRAMENTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–June 28, 2006–California Lottery officials announced today that the SuperLOTTO Plus® jackpot has rolled to a whopping $90 million for Wednesday night’s draw, making it the largest in the nation.
The $90 million SuperLOTTO Plus jackpot has climbed even higher than the current jackpots of the multi-state games Mega Millions and Powerball. This jackpot is the largest in nearly 2 years and is the 9th largest SuperLOTTO Plus jackpot in the California Lottery’s history.
Exactly how big is $90 million? The winner could give everyone in the state of California, 36 million residents, a dollar and still have money left over. In fact, the jackpot amount is more than the human population of any individual U.S. state and a number of countries including Germany (82 million), France (60 million), the United Kingdom (60 million), Italy (58 million) and Canada (32 million) among many others.
To imagine $90 million in cash, take the largest U.S. bill in circulation, the $100 bill, and multiply by 900,000. That’s enough to buy 30 million Big Macs, 46 million McDonald’s milkshakes or to treat the entire population of the United States to a can of Coke.
The huge jackpot means big benefits for California businesses and education too. A retailer who sells a single winning $90 million ticket will receive a $450,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. Education sees 34 cents of every ticket sold and with a jackpot of this size means that approximately $53 million will be going to schools. This year, the California Lottery contributed more than $1.2 billion to education and has provided more than $1 billion annually to California schools for the last six years.
SuperLOTTO Plus can be played at approximately 18,500 retail business establishments around California. The SuperLOTTO Plus draw takes place each Wednesday and Saturday night at 7:58 p.m. Players may purchase tickets until 7:45 p.m. on the night of the draw.
