Australia’s PBL buys Macau casino rights for $900 mln
SYDNEY, March 6 (Reuters) - Publishing and Broadcasting Ltd. an Australia-based media and gaming company, has paid U.S.-based Wynn Resorts Ltd. $900 million for the right to own and operate hotel casino resorts in Macau, pushing PBL shares up 1.6 percent.
The Packer family-owned PBL, which is expanding its gaming business through Asia with joint venture partner Melco International Development Ltd., said the deal would give it more flexibility to operate the two casinos it plans to build in the former Portuguese colony, sending its shares to a more-than-one-year high.
PBL said in a statement on Monday Melco would eventually buy a 40 percent interest in the PBL subsidiary which will own the rights.
PBL Executive Chairman James Packer said the deal would give PBL a "more flexible and robust operating structure" for its two proposed Macau casinos, to be known as "Crown Macau" and "City of Dreams".
The deal will be funded by $400 million of equity and $500 million of bank debt.
PBL shares hit A$17.34 — their highest since January 2005 — before easing back to trade 0.82 percent higher at A$17.21 in a weaker overall market by 0002 GMT.
PBL’s casino business, which includes the glitzy Crown Casino in Melbourne and the Burswood casino in Perth, drove a 12 percent rise in profit for the six months ended Dec. 31, 2005.
